Looking to God for Your Self-Image

Looking to God for Your Self-Image

By Pastor Joseph       5 Minute Read

One of the things that we are being told by our pastors, our parents, and the people of God while growing in the Lord is that we are made in God’s image. That brings up the question in us, “is God a man or a woman.” At least a considerate number of us used to think that way anytime we hear that we are in the image of God. We try to picture what He looks like, or at least what we think He should look like. The pictures of God we see are not helping either as most of them have just the throne and a bright light covering the one sitting on it. But the Bible did say we are made in the image of God – God said it when He wanted to make us. Genesis 1:26 “Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’” There is no doubt God has made each us in His image.

What we should try to understand and get to know deeper is the image of God. Instead of trying to picture God using our appearance or how He looks like using our color – God was not created in our image, we were created in His image. What we should be looking for now or what we should know is the true image of God. When we get the true image of God according to how the Bible stated it, we will know our self-image. In other words, if we look to God and know who He is, we will know who we are and the special abilities that we possess through that relationship. We have been endowed with numerous abilities and it came because we were made to be His children. We used to be like servants, but God made us His children; this is the greatest image of ourselves that we could get. 1 John 3:1 “Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.”

  1. The image of God is beauty - If you are looking for what God looks like, you can be sure it is a beauty – God is beautiful, and He has created us to be beautiful. Isaiah 33:17 “Your eyes will see the King in His beauty; They will see the land that is very far off.” You don’t have to look down on yourself because God created you to be special.  There are many things we face that makes us look ugly, some real challenges can make things look ugly for us but looking to God reminds us that we can make ugly situations beautiful. Psalm 139:14 “I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well.” Not only did God make you beautiful but also made every situation a beauty that needs to be discovered like a diamond in a lump of coal.
  1. Power - The nature of God is power, God is filled with power and he has given us the power. Your focus should not be on the outer appearance because then you will not be able to see the power that God has dropped inside of you. No matter what you are going through now, God has given you the power to handle it – you can use it and stop being afraid. Luke 10:19 “Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” When God said nothing can harm you, it means when your enemies see the power of God in you, they’ll become powerless. Look deep into yourself and see the power of God within you – it opens you to many new possibilities. Things that you currently think you can’t do without; you’ll find yourself overcoming those addictions or dependencies.
  1. Holiness - One of the things that God hates is sin, God does not like to see sin and that’s who He is – He has created us to be like that too! There are things that we face every day, temptations, that the devil wants to use to get the best of us and make us unholy, but God said we should run from away from sin and all its appearances. We can’t take away the fact that we need to be Holy in our daily lives. 1 Peter 1:15 “but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct.”
  1. Love - The nature of God is love – we can’t talk about God and talk of what He has done for us without mentioning His love. God demonstrated His love for us in different ways. No man deserved to live but the love He has for us made Him clear the sins we have been made to carry through one man, Adam. 1 John 4:8 is a very popular verse of the Bible that tells of the true nature and the image of God, what God is. It says, “He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.”

Look deep into yourself and ask, do you have all these qualities of God? God has made you beautiful, He made you good and made you in His image – your self-image in God are these things and you would do well to start manifesting them into your life. It doesn’t matter what people have called you to be. What God called you to be is what matters most and He has called you to be His Children and not a servant – God took His time to make you with His hand which made you very special.

  • It’s wonderful to have something to look towards in these moments, that’s for sure!

  • I really needed to read something like this today, thank you. I struggle a lot with poor body image as I have had issues with being overweight my whole life. Add on top of that a horrible view of myself being a failure that was driven into my brain from a mother who had her own demons. I am a work in progress and I know I need to focus more on God and how God loves me, less on the world.

  • Great reminder of looking to God in refrence to your own self image
