Obeying God by Faith

Many times, we talk about faith but assume it to be a normal thing we claim to have without considering what makes it effective. Faith is not a physical thing; it is a spiritual thing that manifests in the physical. When the woman with the issue of blood had that thought within her that she will touch Jesus and be made whole. It would have been a mere thought and the action of that woman was spiritual and that is called faith. What was spiritual came to manifest in the physical.

Even though Abraham and his wife had become old, God kept telling Abraham that his children will be like the stars – that is something that normally, one should find it hard to believe. When we hear the word faith, the first thing that comes to our mind is, believing what you do not see. In the same manner, God called Abraham and told him to leave his father’s house. Abraham, with no experience or knowing how to leave alone yet believed God and moved out. He was obeying God by faith! The one reason why we call Abraham father of faith is because of “Obedience.” Genesis 12:1 “The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.” There was nothing God will tell Abraham that he wouldn’t be willing to do. Noah also went ahead to obey God and he built this ark not doubting if the rain would come or not – this is Faith! Faith is not just about believing what God has said but it involves taking a step of obedience.

Hebrews 11:1 says “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” Faith doesn’t just happen; you don’t just have faith – what brings faith is obedience. When God asks us to do something even without seeing the future, when we have no experience, but we obey – that is the real faith. The reason why God is pleased with people that have faith is because of obedience. Faith involves movement, it involves action. James 2:17 “In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.”

The power that faith possesses cannot be underestimated. It is capable of saving lives and it can make God's plans for your life come to fulfillment. When God promised a better ending, it is faith that will make it come to reality because it possesses the power to bring things to life. Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans and thoughts that I have for you, says the Lord, plans for peace and well-being and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.”

Now, you must be wondering why faith is so powerful that even for a prayer to be answered, faith must be applied; to believe in Jesus, faith is needed and to go to God the Father, faith is needed – why is faith that powerful?

In his book, "Spirit, Soul, and Body", Andrew Wommack said, “My wife and I went through a period of extreme poverty when we were just starting in full-time ministry. After coming home from Vietnam and getting married, I pastored a small church in Seagoville, Texas. Every penny we had gone toward paying the bills. We were so poor that sometimes we even went without food for a week or two!” the truth of this is that they kept following God’s command with faith and the ministry became big.

When you understand the power of faith, it means you understand the way God works, because he works according to your faith and what you believe him to do. God works in mysterious ways, it takes a good connection, proper study of him and a close relationship to know and understand how God works. In this same manner, the proper study of faith helps to understand the power of faith. There are books like this that explain the significance, the secrets of faith and how faith works. Studying these books is not a waste of time. Some people want to start manifesting the power of faith without a careful study of the power itself. Just as 2 Timothy 2:15 instructs us, "Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman who needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." When you diligently search deeper into the mystery of faith, you thirst for more, you want to know more so you can have more. These are the kind of people that God wants. Matthew 5:6 assures us by saying,"You're blessed when you've worked up a good appetite for God. He's food and drink in the best meal you'll ever eat."

God knows what is best, He won't tell you to something that what will put you in trouble. If you want to build your faith, then you must follow the word of God to the letter. John 15:14 “You are my friends if you do what I command you.” If we obey what He is telling us to do, we will be His friend which means we have a personal relationship Him. Before we can obey Him, we must love Him because it is only those whom we love that we can truly put our trust in and do whatever that person says. Jesus calling us His friend means He wants to be there for us all the time. If King Saul had obeyed the word of the Lord, he would have remained to be the King of Israel, but he did not choose to do so. If obedience can boost our relationship with God so also, it will help us to build our faith in Him. It does not matter what level you currently find yourself if you will obey God with all your heart by applying faith, the end will be great. Deuteronomy 28:1 “Indeed, if you diligently obey the Lord your God to carry out all his commands that I'm giving you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth.”

*Thank-you Pastor Joseph for taking time out of your ministries in Nigeria once again to collaborate with us on the important topic of faith and obedience!
